Liberation of the Faculties1
The forces that can lead to initiatic realization cannot become active until they are freed from impediments, both inner and outer.
In this article we consider only the external impediments and offer some rules for life by which one can proceed to their removal.
I.
The first condition is the mastery of absolutely clear thinking. To this end one has to get free from the wandering of thoughts even for a very short time: a few minutes will serve, though more would be better.
One needs to become master of oneâs own thought world. We are not masters of it if outer circumstances such as our job, habits, social pressures, time of day, obligations, and so forth, impose a certain thought and manner on its development. In the relevant span of time one must, of oneâs own free will, unburden the mind from the usual everyday train of thoughts, take a specific thought and place it through oneâs own intitative in the center of oneâs mind. It does not have to be a lofty or interesting thought. In fact, it will help for present purposes to start by choosing a thought that is neither interesting nor important. This will better stimulate the autonomous activity of thinking, which is the main thing: whereas if one chooses an interesting thought it will pull the mind along with it. This discipline is better served by thinking of a pin than of (a) Napoleon.2 You must tell yourself: âNow I will start with this thought, and through my own intitiative connect everything that can be objectively relevant to it.â The chosen thought should end by standing in the forefront of the mind with as much presence and liveliness as at the start. This exercise should be done daily for at least a month. You can take a different thought each day, or keep the same one for several days. After doing this, in a second phase one tries to bring to full awareness that inner sensation of firmness and security that will soon appear when one observes oneâs own mind. In the third phase, one concludes the exercise by concentrating oneâs own consciousness in a place a little above the root of the nose, between the eyes, and with active visualization causing a feeling of a flow that goes horizontally from the brow round both sides to the back of the head, then going down the middle of the back along the spinal column, pouring the accumulated feeling into those parts of the body, together with the words: FIRMNESS AND SECURITY.
